Davaoeños protect and promote Davao through social media
Davaoeños find a common purpose online – to focus on promoting their city to the rest of the world

DAVAO, Philippines – Davao City has faced a lot of controversy online. In the midst of all of this, Davaoeños find a common purpose online – to focus on promoting their city to the rest of the world. Is the social media community in your city as solid as Davao’s?

Stacy de Jesus reports.

Davaoeños are very proud of many things about their city. Aside from the and pristine mountains & beaches, they have a 911 system that works.

Sadly, not everyone knows about the wonders of this city. This was one of the issues raised in the Share Philippines Tweetup discussion.

RIA JOSE, DAVAO BLOGGERS SOCIETY FOUNDING PRESIDENT: There’s a very big need to promote Davao because Davao has a lot to offer. Not just Davao City but Davao region as a whole. There’s so many things you can do here in Davao.

Social media plays a big role in shaping Davao’s image.

PERRY LAMANILAO, DAVAO CATHOLIC HERALD SOCIAL MEDIA HEAD: The role of social media is very important among youth because it’s where we can communicate most of the time. We use social media to raise awareness, not only for tourism but for different kinds of activities.

From the punching incident involving Mayor Sara Duterte to actor Ramon Bautista’s ‘hipon’ remark, Davaoeños defend their city.

RIA JOSE, DAVAO BLOGGERS SOCIETY FOUNDING PRESIDENT: A lot of people outside of Davao City masyado maraming opinion (have too many opinions) especially those who don’t understand how governance is being done here in Davao. People were really so defensive of Mayor Sara and really went all out on Twitter and Facebook to protect Mayor Sarabut after several incidents already like people criticizing Davao for our very strict laws and everything. It has come to a point especially when the Ramon Bautista issue came up that people are attacking Davao City and our politicians once again and we’re just like, you can’t really stop people from saying what they want to say and it was not helpful to our cause anyway so we just focused on promoting the city, promoting whatever it is in the city.

Davao is a very pro-active city and key to that is its people. Here, the community spirit is very strong and that pretty much sums up their behavior online. Its local government is very much present on social media, and over one million five hundred of its population are registered on Facebook. Together, they share Davao to the rest of the world.
