#ShareIloilo: Promoting heritage through cultural identity
Heritage advocate Eugene Jamerlan says pride of place and identity is important to preserve heritage

ILOILO CITY, Philippines – Home to decades-old churches and Spanish-era houses, Iloilo is a gold mine for history buffs and heritage advocates.

But more work needs to be done to promote the province’s cultural treasures. A group of citizens passionate about heritage have come together to keep up Iloilo’s rich and vibrant past alive.

The Iloilo Cultural Heritage Conservation Council (ICCHCC) was formed to promote the preservation of heritage buildings and help the younger generation understand the value of their community’s rich past.

In an interview with Rappler on Wednesday, November 12, ICCHCC member Eugene Jamerlan said the campaign for cultural appreciation begins with instilling a sense of pride of place among locals.

“When people ask me about Iloilo, it’s, ‘Who are you?’ It’s really your identity. What do you tell people? And when we started doing this 10 years ago, we had to start with ourselves. We had to dig up and look at our family histories,” he said.

While discussing how present Ilonggo culture has been heavily influenced by commerce and trade in the past, Jamerlan emphasized that it’s important for locals to be educated about their own culture to serve as “ambassadors” that can help keep the heritage alive. – Rappler.com
