WATCH: ‘Lucky day’: Surviving torture during martial law
About 34,000 were tortured. Nearly 3,240 were killed. Others lived to retell their ordeal so that the new generation would learn from this dark period of Philippine history.

MANILA, Philippines – As the country commemorates the 30th People Power 1 anniversary, two torture victims share their horrific experiences during martial law.

Bayan Muna representative Neri Colmenares recalls how at 18 years old he suffered in the hands of his tormentors. According to the activist lawmaker, the physical pain numbed his senses but the mental torture he endured was limitless. At gun point, his life was put at the mercy of luck.

It was doubly painful for Bonifacio “Boni” Ilagan, vice chairperson of SELDA, a group of former political detainees. He was not only tortured, his activist sister was also raped and executed along with 9 other activists.

According to Amnesty International, about 34,000 were tortured and nearly 70,000 were imprisoned during this dark period of the country’s history. – Rappler.com
