#BaguioCityShakeDrill: A community approach to disaster preparedness
Baguio City is set to hold its first city-wide earthquake drill on March 31, 2016

MANILA, Philippines – Remember the July 16, 1990 earthquake, and take heed of the lessons learned since then. (READ: #BaguioCityShakeDrill: City of Pines prepares for ‘The Big One’)

This was the message of regional disaster management and Baguio City authorities at a workshop held at the University of the Cordilleras on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, in preparation for the first city-wide earthquake drill that will happen on March 31, 2016.

“By the time disaster strikes, you’re on your own,” said Andrew Alex Uy, Regional Director of the Office of Civil Defense-Cordillera Autonomous Region (OCD-CAR). Being prepared for a disaster is not just the role of officials, but also of all members of the community, Uy added.

Done in partnership with Rappler and Smart Communications, the Agos powered by eBayanihan workshop educated students and teachers from different schools on the importance of having a disaster preparedness mindset, and how to use technology to save lives.

MovePH Director Zak Yuson showed how technology is helping change the world and how people communicate. He also discussed how social media could be used for social good.

Agos Community Coordinator Lou Gepuela explained how information serves as aid and encouraged the students and teachers present to become information advocates.

The attendees were taught how to utilize the Agos Alert Map, as well as how to communicate actionable information on weather, floods, relief, and rescue using Twitter, Facebook, SMS, and the Agos Alert Map.

Officials from the OCD-CAR taught the proper procedure to duck, cover, and hold, in case one is caught indoors during an earthquake.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan closed the session by recounting his personal experience during the July 1990 earthquake, and asked the participants to teach their friends and relatives the importance of being prepared.

Dapat ito yung pinag-uusapan. Dapat ito yung binibigyan ng pansin,” emphasized Domogan. (This is what we should be talking about. This is what we should be paying attention to.)
