'Sana ma-rape ka': Netizens bully anti-Duterte voter
MANILA, Philippines – "Sana ma-rape ka." (I hope you get raped.)
This is just one of the hundreds of private messages Facebook user Renee Juliene Karunungan received from netizens who claim they are supporters of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
In a Facebook post on March 22, Karunungan had said she is campaigning against Duterte.
"Duterte is a lazy choice. No one man can solve the problem. Discipline comes from ourselves," Karunungan said.
She also urged Filipinos to "make this democracy, fought for by so many Filipinos who died for the freedoms we have now, work."
The original post itself quickly went viral, garnering more than 11,000 reactions and almost 1,400 comments. The post was also shared about 4,000 times.
Most of the comments on Karunungan's original post came from netizens who claimed they are Duterte supporters. They called her "bobo" (stupid), cursed her, and even wished her death.
On Thursday, April 7, Karunungan posted screenshots of the private messages she got, particularly the "rude" ones.
The album has already received more than 4,000 reactions and was shared almost 6,000 times as of posting.
"Mga kaibigan ko gustong pumatay sayo! May pera ka naman, handa mo na lang 'yan pang gastos sa ospital," one message read. (I have friends who want to kill you. You have the money, save that for your hospital expenses.)
"You are as stupid as your post. And who do you want to make democracy work (for)? Binay? Roxas? Poe? Can you idiots just stop with the mindset that Duterte will lead a bloody administration, please?" another said.
Some supporters went as far as wishing Karunungan harm. "Ul*l. T*ngina mo. UP ka man din galing, pero utak dilis ka. Bobo ka ang pangit mo. Sana ma-rape ka, manakawan ka. 'Yan gusto mo, 'di ba? Ayaw mo ng pagbabago dahil ayaw mo kay Duterte. Sana lang one of these days ma-rape ka para matauhan ka."
(Stupid. S*n of a b*tch. You are from UP but you have the brain of an anchovy. You're stupid and ugly. I hope you get raped, or get mugged. That's what you want, right? You don't want change because you are against Duterte. I hope one of these days you get raped so you'll become enlightened.)
Karunungan said the online feedback she got saddened her, but what bothered her most was the kind of "values we have come to uphold as a society."
This is not the first time that apparent Duterte supporters have been accused of cyber bullying.
During a forum at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, a student asked Duterte to provide straightforward answers to his questions. Social media users who thought the student was being rude searched for the boy's name and other private information. They also created various Facebook pages to attack him, going as far as saying that he should die.
Following this incident, Duterte urged supporters to "take the moral high ground when engaging in any kind of discourse."
The presidential candidate also said: "Let us be reminded that we are here together because of our collective desperation for the country to break away from discontent, poverty, corruption, criminality, and proliferation of drugs. These are the reasons why we have aspired for real change." – Raisa Serafica/Rappler.com
