VIRAL: College graduate’s recipe for success: Titas, grit, and siomai
''Di ako nalungkot kasi naging mahirap buhay ko, namin (financially). Dahil dito kami naging matatag,' says the college graduate

MANILA, Philippines – It takes a village to raise a child, and it was definitely the case for Love Ramos, a recent college graduate.

Ramos, who studied at the Lyceum of the Philippines University, posted a Facebook status thanking her family and the members of her community for their support, but this was not just any thank-you post.

In the post, Ramos said her 16 years of education were funded by a combination of her parents’ hard work and her own grit.

Her parents worked together to create and sell food products like hamburgers, siomai, and graham balls.

Ramos’ mother would prepare the food, which her father would then sell around the Tunasan, Poblacion, and Putatan areas of Muntinlupa City.

Of her father, she said, “He is the man who works 24/7, umulan man o umaraw para lang makapagbenta ng madami at hindi uuwing hindi ubos ang paninda to sustain our educational needs.”

(He is the man who works 24/7, rain or shine to sell a lot, and will not come home without selling everything to sustain our educational needs.)

At the same time, she described her mother’s faith in her. “Sa sobrang tiwala (niya), ‘di (niya) naisip na ilipat ako ng public school, na madalas hindi naiintindihan ng iba pero mas naniniwala (siya) na kaya ko, kaya namin,” she wrote.

(Because of her faith in us, she didn’t think of moving me to a public school, which sometimes other people did not understand, but she had a stronger belief that I could do it, we could do it.)

Aunts, uncles, and even churchmates also lent a hand, especially when the family was in financial trouble.

But Ramos would not have succeeded if she had not pulled her own weight.

Aside from staying competitive in school, and outside when she joined competitions, Ramos had to apply for different scholarships to pay her way through college.

Despite these challenges, however, Ramos said she had no regrets.

Di ako nalungkot kasi naging mahirap buhay ko, namin (financially). Dahil dito kami naging matatag (I am not sad that our life was hard, financially, because this is why our relationship is enduring). I can say, that I am far more blessed than any other child ’cause I (gained) a simple yet happy, loving and supportive family,” she wrote.

Having fulfilled her wish of getting through college, Ramos and her family are looking forward to attaining the next goal: creating a better life. – Rappler.com
