PAGADIAN CITY, Philippines – Flights to and from Pagadian City were cancelled on Wednesday, May 15, after protestors blocked the runway demanding compensation from the government.

The heirs of Datu Lucas Taug Boto once again camped on the runway of Pagadian National Airport a month after they held a similar protest. They are asking the government to compensate the use of their land where the runway sits.

Cebu Pacific cancelled several flights to Manila and Cebu. The company arranged an extra flight to accommodate affected passengers, giving them option to rebook or refund their tickets through a travel fund.

PAL Express had earlier suspended their flights servicing Pagadian and re-routed affected passengers to Ozamis City.

The barricade came after the failure of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to deliver the P8 million payment for their 3 hectares of expropriated land as part of the Pagadian Airport Development Project of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) back in 1997.

The family took the case to court in 1999.

After 13 years of legal battle, Judge Edilberto Absin of the Pagadian Regional Trial Court (RTC) ruled that the Taug-Boto family was the legitimate owner of the land.

In an earlier interview with Rappler, Bai Sominal Taug, one of the owners who led the protest, stressed that it was their only way to demand payment from the government. –Rappler.com
