MANILA, Philippines – Former Parañaque mayor Joey Marquez failed in his comeback bid after losing the congressional race in Paranaque’s second district to incumbent vice-mayor Gus Tambunting last May 13.

Marquez trailed behind Tambunting by 8,491. He only earned 44,587 votes compared to Tambunting’s 53,078 votes, based on the unofficial results from the Comelec-Rappler Mirror Server, as of 8:26 am on May 16.

Tambunting was officially proclaimed by the local board of canvassers as the winning congressman for the district at the Parañaque Sports Complex on May 14.

Rise and fall

Marquez began his political career as vice-mayor of Parañaque in 1992. He then became the city mayor for 3 consecutive terms, from 1995-2004.

His first attempt at a congressional seat in the 2004 elections also failed. He tried his luck again to return as city mayor in the 2010 elections, but lost to incumbent mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr.

He went into a political break from 2004-2010 and decided to concentrate on his TV hosting career.

On the other hand, Joey’s ex-wife, Alma Moreno, was re-elected as councilor in the first district of the city. – Rappler.com
