MANILA, Philippines – After two years, families ravaged by Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) will finally get their new homes, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)

The DSWD Modified Shelter Assistance Program will provide 1,929 permanent houses for families in Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley.

DSWD described the housing units as “disaster-resistant homes” made of concrete and good lumber.

Each unit is 70 square meters, with a two-room division, a bathroom, septic tank, kitchen, and a window-level concrete wall. Its interiors and exteriors are painted.

Funding came from DSWD, while provincial governments managed the site development, land preparation, and engineering operations.

The construction of homes amounted to P301,020,000.00. More houses are currently being built in the two provinces.

DSWD targets to build 3,966 more permanent homes in other relocation sites.

Pablo, one of the worst typhoons to ever hit the Philippines, devastated Eastern Mindanao in December 2012.

It affected around 6 million people, killing over a thousand and displacing over 200,000 residents. The total cost of damage was nearly P14 billion. – Rappler.com
