Story of recovery
The town of St Bernard in Southern Leyte where nearly 1,000 people and an entire village perished in the 2006 mudslide taught the whole town and the province the importance of preparedness even as it moves forward to build back better.
The story of Southern Leyte's recovery – the obstacles and the opportunities – is the highlight of the forum #MoveSoLeyte: Prepare, respond, recover to be held on Thursday, March 6, at the multi-purpose hall of the Southern Leyte State University's (SLSU) Sogod campus.
It will also tackle how citizens can participate in building resilient communities through the power of social media, technology, and community action.
Rappler, through its civic-engagement arm, MovePH, holds the event in partnership with SLSU and its student publication The Campus Headliner on the occasion of the university's 10th founding anniversary.
Students, youth leaders, faculty, advocacy groups, and government agencies from Southern Leyte and neighboring areas are invited to participate in the free event.
Rappler CEO and executive editor Maria Ressa will jumpstart and headline the event with her keynote address entitled "Technology and You."
Focusing on Rappler’s experience on engaging various sectors and building communities online and offline, MovePH head Zak Yuson will deliver his talk on "Social Media for Social Change."
Southern Leyte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRMMO) head Danilo Atienza will talk about the DRRM blueprint of the province.
Rappler multimedia reporter Voltaire Tupaz will introduce Project Agos, a climate change and DRRM information platform which local government units, first responders, and the public can use for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
Get updates through our liveblog here. MovePH's Raisa Serafica along with other students from SLSU will be on board to keep you posted. - Rappler.com
