Filipino maid in Singapore accused of stealing winning lottery ticket

MANILA, Philippines – An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) working as a domestic helper in Singapore says she’s innocent of stealing a lottery ticket that has won SG$2.3 million (P75.6 million).

The Straits Times reported Saturday, August 15 that Filipino domestic worker identified only as Len, 44, won a Singapore lottery prize worth SG$ 2.3 million (P75.6 million) last June, but in July has been accused of stealing the winning ticket.

Len she bought the ticket last June at a Singapore Pools outlet in Tampines, and on the same day she learned she won the top prize. She said she later used the money to buy land in the Philippines and to build a house for her children.

Around a month after winning, police came to her employer’s home and said a complaint has been lodged against her, accusing her of stealing the winning ticket.

She took the police to the outlet where she bought the winning ticket and also showed them receipts for the money transfers she has made the day she bought the ticket.  

“They said the security footage of me buying the tickets had been erased,” she told the Straits Times. 

Len said she is worried because she isn’t being told who is accusing her of stealing, but authorities haven’t asked her yet to return the prize. Despite cooperation Len and support from her employer, Singapore police are continuing their investigation

“She has been honest with us and she’s a very nice person,” her employer told the same newspaper. 

Despite winning the lotto, she also said she plans to continue working for her employer of 14 years, whom she already considers “family.”  – Rappler.com
