WATCH: OFWs for Duterte gather in Dubai desert
MANILA, Philippines – Despite the stretch of sand and scorching heat, a group of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) gathered last May 5-6 at the Desert Safari in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to express their support for presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte.
Shouting, "Para sa tunay na pagbabago, Duterte tayo!" (For real change, let's vote for Duterte!), the OFWs lit candles and prayed.
“We are hungry for a real change and we always trust him that he can deliver everything he said," said Sheldone Dacalos, one of the participants.
Dacalos, a graphic designer based in the UAE, and his group Caught Productions documented the gathering and posted a video on YouTube on Satuday, May 7.
Roughly 500 OFWs attended the rally. Other supporters were not able to attend due to work schedule conflicts and the distance, according to Dacalos. The event was organized by OFWs Noor Guiapal and Marge Gomez.
The rally was sponsored by the attendees and organizers, with expenses coming from their own pockets.
While the attendees had to brave the scorching heat, Dacalos said it was worth it "all because of Duterte," which they affectionately call "Tatay (father) Digong."
"The only thing we continue to do is to pray for his success and safety for his campaign. We love him as we love our own father. We are always here for him no matter what happens,” Dacalos said. - with reports from Violet Bilbao/Rappler.com
