RHODE ISLAND, USA – The Kaya Collaborative (Kaya Co) is seeking 12 emerging leaders from overseas Filipino communities to lead a greater culture of connection between diaspora and development. Applications are due on February 10th.

The Filipino diaspora is 10 million strong: a full tenth of the global Filipino population that contributes 10% of national GDP in remittances and donations every year. However, these investments rarely tackle immediate issues and the root issues that have forced migration upon so many. Kaya Co aims to shift this culture from inside.

With the support of the Ayala Foundation and Brown University’s Social Innovation Initiative, the nonprofit is offering an immersive, 10-week fellowship program for young leaders across disciplines to experience an intensive introduction to social issues and social change in the Philippine context.

Their goal is to develop agents of exchange: informed and inspired leaders who will activate their own overseas networks as allies and advocates to homegrown social change initiatives. The fellowship experience will consist of two projects:

Interning with a social venture

A sample of Kaya Co’s internship offerings:
fundraising strategy and business development research with Unlad Kabayan, one of the pioneers in harnessing migrant savings for homeland development;
research on scholarships and educational innovations with Edukasyon.PH, an online gateway of higher ed resources for Filipino students;
fundraising and community engagement with Ashoka Philippines, part of the largest global network of social entrepreneurs;
social impact measurement with Rags2Riches, a “stylish social statement” that provides sustainable employment and training to over 800 artisan women;
a rebranding campaign with Gifts & Graces, a fair trade organization that has worked to build capacity in, provide market access to, and raise the livelihoods of marginalized Philippine communities;
and international marketing strategy with Route +63 Travels, an organization that promotes environmental responsibility and local development through tourism.
Designing the Kaya Compass

A day out of each week, Kaya fellows will work together to create the Kaya Compass: a new online portal to connect individuals in the diaspora with sustainable social initiatives in the Philippines. Acting as a foundation for the network that Kaya Co. aims to build, the website will contain:
profiles of Filipino social change initiatives, their models, successes and needs;
profiles of people interested in supporting them globally;
opportunities to donate, volunteer, intern, work, research;
toolkits for mobilizing community through fundraisers, independent courses, events and other initiatives centered around social impact.
Join the pioneer fellowship cohort and help Kaya Co. make this all happen. Apply for the fellowship today! – Press Release/Rappler.com
