Fil-Am leader tapped for Los Angeles public works board
Joel Jacinto, a non-profit director and historic Filipinotown leader, is named public works commissioner by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti

MANILA, Philippines – Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has tapped Joel Jacinto, executive director of non-profit organization Search to Involve Filipino Americans (SIPA), to serve the city’s board of public works.

Jacinto, who was sworn in on Tuesday, August 11, joins the ranks of a few Asian Americans to ever serve on the board. According to a local newswire, Jacinto replaces Commissioner Matt Szabo, who has been appointed as the LA mayor’s budget advisor.

“This was very much unexpected, but very much a privilege and an honor to represent my family, my community, [SIPA], the broader Filipino American, Asian American Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities,” Jacinto said.

His organization, SIPA, seeks to include and encourage Filipinos to take leadership positions.

Jacinto, a community leader for over two decades, was one of the few Filipino leaders who pushed for the designation of the Filipinotown neighborhood in LA. Jacinto will take a two-year leave from SIPA while he serves the board. – Rappler.com
