Holy Thursday retreat: Night of silence
The night of Holy Thursday
may be described as the night of silence.
It is the night when everyone and everything
kept silent and made no protest.
When our Lord entered Jerusalem
and was greeted with loud "Hosannas!"
the Jewish leaders scolded him,
and basically asked him to tell the crowd to shut up.
How did Jesus respond?
He said, "I tell you,
if these people were silent,
the very stones would cry out!" (Luke 19:40)

Here was someone
who could make even the stones sing!
And yet on the night of his betrayal and arrest,
there was only the silence of stones.
Even the Father and all His angels
kept their peace and watched without protest.
No one and nothing raised a voice –
except, that is, for Simon Peter.
