MANILA, Philippines – Surviving World War II veterans will soon be able to enjoy their disability pensions.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) on Sunday, October 6 announced it has released P2.9 billion for war veterans’ total administrative disability (TAD) pensions from 1994 to 2012.

In a statement, DBM said it approved the release the amount after it finished validating the proposed list of beneficiaries submitted by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO).

The payments will be made directly through the automated teller machine (ATM) accounts of validated veterans.

PVAO, an agency under the Department of National Defense, was able to generate P4 billion in savings in 2010, after switching from check to electronic payment of pensions.

The amount enabled PVAO to pay arrears for veterans’ TAD pensions from 2003 to 2009, DBM said.

Only veterans who served WWII and in Vietnam and Korea are qualified to receive TAD pensions.

In validating the list of legitimate WWII veterans, the DBM compared the list of surviving WWII veterans submitted by PVAO with the list of regular Armed Forces of the Philippines pensioners who are considered veterans by virtue of age. – Rappler.com
