3 teens swept away by Manila Bay waves amid Lando
MANILA, Philippines – Strong currents in Manila Bay swept away 3 teenagers on Sunday, October 18, as strong winds and rains from Typhoon Lando (Koppu) affected the Philippines’ capital city.
In a phone interview with Rappler, Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno said the 3 teenagers were safe as of 9 pm on Sunday. He identified the teenagers as the following:
- Joel Calimpas, 15
- Jade Salinas, 13
- Sam Roa, 11
Moreno said the teenagers came from Baseco Compound and were swept away to the side of Hotel H2O near the Quirino Grandstand.
Based on his assessment, the distance between Baseco and Hotel H2O is around 2 kilometers.
Moreno then appealed to parents, “Pangalagaan nila 'yung mga anak nila.” (They should take care of their children.)
‘Huwag matigas ang ulo’
Earlier, Manila disaster chief Johnny Yu said their city government is implementing precautionary measures for the typhoon. One of these is to implement a “no-walk zone” along the Manila Bay.
The Manila city government is considering to do the same thing in the so-called University Belt if floodwaters rise there.
Yu said, “Ang panawagan ko lang po ay huwag matigas ang ulo.” (My only appeal is for people not to be hard-headed.)
Typhoon Lando continued its slow march through northern Luzon on Sunday.
In its latest weather bulletin, the state weather bureau placed 5 areas under storm warning signal number 3, even as Lando is expected to exit the Philippines' landmass earlier than expected. – Rappler.com
