HIGHLIGHTS: Tindog Tayo 2016 forum on disaster preparedness
What should the next Philippine president do to address the country's vulnerability to disasters and climate change?

MANILA, Philippines – As a country particularly vulnerable to supertyphoons and other natural hazards, the Philippines needs a leader with a strong will and a sound platform to address these challenges, according to the Disaster Risk Reduction Network Philippines (DRRNetPhils), a national organization of concerned communities, practitioners, and advocates.

The incoming President “must not only be competent, but must also ensure that the voices of the vulnerable – women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and those living in isolated areas – are heard and taken into consideration during planning, decision-making, and in the implementation of risk reduction issues,” says Maria Fellizar-Cagay, DRRNetPhils lead convenor.

“He or she must have political will to push decisive action for the good of the nation, towards a resilient Philippines,” Cagay added.

To help raise awareness on this important issue, DRRNetPhils called upon the presidential candidates to make disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA), as well as ecosystem management and restoration (EMR) a priority.

In their forum, titled “Tindog Tayo 2016: A Presidential Forum for a Resilient Philippines,” focus was given to the candidates’ agendas and platforms, with emphasis on how they would enhance existing DRR and CCA policies and structures.

“The lives and livelihoods of our people are at stake, our development of our country is at stake,” Cagay said.
