MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – In a span of two weeks, Cotabato and other parts of Mindanao were rocked by 3 strong earthquakes, the latest on October 31 when a magnitude 6.5 tremor shook the same areas.

The quakes killed at least 21 people, injured hundreds, and displaced over 30,000 individuals. (READ: LOOK: Buildings destroyed by magnitude 6.5 quake that struck parts of Mindanao)

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in a statement on Friday, November 1, that local search and rescue teams continued to respond to reports of injuries and missing persons.

Lending a helping hand to those affected, priests also opened the doors of Kidapawan cathedral as an evacuation center for victims on the same day of the earthquake.

The earthquake struck nearly two weeks after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit the same area and affected other parts of Mindanao. The October 16 earthquake left 6 dead and nearly a hundred people hurt.

With the threat of additional aftershocks and their homes partially or totally damaged, Mindanaoans called for help and support. Mindanao residents are in urgent need of food, medicine, tents, clothes, and blankets.

Various groups have also organized donation drives and relief operations for the victims.

Globe, for instance, has set up free call and charging stations to help affected families with their communication needs. These stations are located at 2 towns near the epicenter of the earthquake:

  • Kidapawan City Hall starting October 29 from 9 am to 6 pm
  • Tulunan Municipal Hall starting October 30 from 10:30 am to 6 pm

Globe said it will open more free call and charging stations as the need arises.

Here is a list of relief operations for the communities affected by the earthquake:

Shared Aid Fund for Emergency Response

Individuals or groups who want to extend long-term help to victims of the Mindanao earthquakes can donate to the Shared Aid Fund for Emergency Response (Safer). It is a shared fund accessible to its 3 member networks that are humanitarian response leaders in the Philippines: the Caucus of Development Non-governmental Organizations, the Humanitarian Response Consortium, and NASSA/Caritas Philippines.

These 3 networks respond to different types of emergencies while Safer raises funds through public and private fundraising to augment these responses. The networks or members of the networks can apply with Safer for funding support, and money is distributed transparently to the most deserving and high-impact application.

To ensure accountability, Safer administers the grant distribution and provides third-party verification, which shall be reported back to donors.

The Quick Response Fund (QRF) is one of the two mechanisms of Safer. It is used to provide funds quickly to responding organizations while a public appeal is organized to replenish the QRF and raise money for larger and more long-term responses.

During non-emergency times, Safer’s fundraising efforts are focused in building the QRF for readiness and preparedness.

To help support Safer in quickly providing funds to responding organizations, interested individuals may donate online or do a pledge

Interested donors may also send cash donations via bank deposit to the following account:

Bank of the Philippine Islands
