MANILA, Philippines – The Taiwanese government donated $1.11 million for the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) to demonstrate its commitment to help the Philippines in times of disasters.
“The prompt emergency relief assistance of Taiwan to the Philippines is a solid evidence of my country’s commitment and steadfast support to the Philippines and its people,” Ambassador Raymond Wang, representative of the Taipei Economic Cultural Office, said during the turnover ceremony recently.
“We are hoping that the tokens of love received by the Philippines not only from our country, but also from the whole international community could serve as a beacon of hope to Filipinos to rise again from the devastation brought by the super typhoon,” he added.
The check was received by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
DSWD Secretary Corazon Soliman thanked the people of Taiwan for their help and for being a longtime partner of the Department in providing aid to disaster victims.
Before this, the Taiwanese government provided around $1 billion for survivors of major Philippine disasters, including the 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Bohol and Typhoon Pablo in 2012.
As of June 4, DSWD has received a total of $23 million in foreign donations and P91 million ($2,078,576.50) local donations for Yolanda survivors. – Rappler.com
