Davao City flooded after heavy rains, commuters stranded
No casualties or damage have been reported so far, but heavy rains continue in the evening and some areas are experience power interruption

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Heavy rains have caused flooding in several streets in Davao City, leaving many passengers stranded on Wednesday evening, October 29.

Davao’s Central 911 said flooded areas include Quezon Boulevard, Ramon Magsaysay Avenue, Bangoy Street, Suazo Street, JP Laurel Avenue, particularly the intersection near the Southern Philippines Medical Center and the roads around the Davao Overland Transport Terminal.

The rain started at around 6:20 pm and quickly flooded the affected areas within 15 minutes.

The entire city is still experiencing heavy rains and thunderstorms as of posting.

The city’s emergency unit said the Toril area was experiencing power interruption because of fallen trees due to continuous rain and strong wind. Even 911 Toril EMS’ satellite station exits were blocked by fallen trees.

The Davao Light and Power Company also reported some problems with the National Grid Corporation’s Digos line.

Davao has been hit by several floodings this year, which prompted the local government to immediately pour in money to improve the drainage system in the city.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had ordered the massive cleanup on the drainages while the Department of Public Works and Highways-Region 11 allocated P50 million to construct new and better drainage systems and to rehabilitate existing structures.

No casualties or damage were reported after Wednesday’s floods, but the local government said it would regularly advise residents to remain vigilant and to immediately dial 911 if they needed assistance. – Rappler.com
