Climate Reality Project launches global call for strong emissions reduction agreement
The campaign will highlight the role of local communities in encouraging their politicians to help reach zero emissions against climate change

The Climate Reality Project (CRP) launched its global call to campaign for a strong emissions reductions agreement at the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 21st Conference of Parties (COP) in December 2015.

According to the CRP, a “strong agreement” would include meaningful emissions reduction commitments based on national circumstances, a system of periodic review for these commitments, and a long-term goal of net zero carbon emissions.

The Road to Paris effort will mobilize public support from the global community and citizens of concerned countries that hold “strategic significance” in the coming negotiations. These countries include Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, China, Philippines, South Africa, and the United States.

“The UN climate negotiations in December mark a crucial opportunity for the international community to come to a bold, universal agreement,” US Former Vice President and Climate Reality Chairperson Al Gore said.

He added that the efforts should go beyond December to ensure a lasting effect that will combat climate change. It is, according to him, the best time for people to “lend their voices to the cause and urge leaders to take historic first step.”

“The Road to Paris campaign will not end at COP21 as we cannot afford to gamble with the future of our planet,” Gore explained. “Solutions to the climate crisis are within reach but in order to capture them, we must take urgetn action today across every level of society.”

The organization will also help train and build on work already existing in each key country. With the support of Climate Reality headquarters, each country will employ earned media tactics to educate and mobilize communities through events and other grassroots intiatives.

Through these activities, people from different communities can help strengthen the commitments of their national governments.

“This year stands to be a  critical turning point where  the world comes together to  address climate change,” Climate Reality President and CEO Ken Berlin said. “It is our  responsibility to do everything we can to help  spur action around the globe, providing support and guidance to the most critical players on the road to Paris.”

The Philippines is one of the key countries targetted by the campaign. As the most affected by climate change, according to the 2015 Global Climate Risk Index, it is the high time for the country to take action.

The country currently chairs the Climate Vulnerable Forum and actively participates in the large negotiating bloc called G77+ China.

“Filipino negotiators and civil society organizations have been long respected in their stance and positions in climate finance and loss and damage talks,” Climate Reality Philippine manager Rodne Galicha said.

He added that he expects”in order to walk the talk, the government needs to submit a bottom-up Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) document that includes integrated migration and adaptation strategies while pushing for the Department of Energy to implement thte National Renewable Energy Plan (NEP).”

The NEP aims to triple the renewable energy capacity of the country by 2030 and to include in its policy the phasing out of local col power plants by 2020.

A Climate Caravan will start on May 2015 and will travel around the Philippines with Climate Reality leaders and champions to let grassroots communities realize their importance in establishing solutions at home and how their collective power can change the way politicians think, feel, and do to solve the climate crisis.

It will also highlight conversations in local government units’ access to the People’s Survivial Fund and hold workshps in integerating climate and disaster risk reduction and management in local planning and budgetting. – Rappler.com
