MANILA, Philippines  (2nd UPDATE) – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit parts of Mindanao and Eastern Visayas on Friday afternoon, July 3, with the epicenter located 41 km northeast of Burgos town in Surigao del Norte.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), intensities were felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity 5: Surigao City, Siargao, Agusan Del Sur
  • Intensity 4: Dinagat Islands
  • Intensity 3: San Juan, Southern Leyte; Tacloban, Palo, both in Leyte; Lapu Lapu
  • Intensity 2: Bislig City, Surigao Del Sur; Davao City

The United States Geological Survey recorded the tremor at 6.0 magnitude.

Minor damage

Del Carmen Mayor Alfredo Coro, who was in Surigao City when the earthquake happened, said he felt the tremor for more than 5 seconds.

He saw cracks on the wall of a grocery story in front of the Northeastern Mindanao Colleges (NEMCO). Some people were knocked off balance by the shaking of the ground, Coro said. 

In his town of Del Carmen on the island of Siargao, Coro said the municipal disaster risk reduction office has started to assess if the quake caused infrastructure damage and injuries. 

No casualties or damage have been reported in the town as of Friday afternoon, Coro said.
