Balangkayan and Hernani destroyed by Haiyan
EASTERN SAMAR, Philippines - It's been four days since Typhoon Yolanda, international name Haiyan, barrelled through the Philippines and left crippling devastation in its wake. Whole cities in the Visayas region were flattened and people pushed to the brink of desperation. Immediately following Yolanda's landfall, no news came from the region for nearly 24 hours.
Now, the scope of the destruction is slowly being pieced together, with news from stricken, outlying communities reaching the public. For the Eastern Samar towns of Balangkayan and Hernani, pictures and video tell the story.
Reaching out to their relatives, survivors from these towns say they're safe as they describe heartbreaking loss. (WATCH: Eastern Samar: 'My prayer is for our story to reach the President')
Appealing to the President and fellow Filipinos, they ask food, water and relief.
