The Grammy-winning Christian rock band is allowing free downloads of 'Fall Asleep,' hoping generous tips will gather enough for the Philippine Red Cross

MANILA, Philippines – “Fall Asleep,” to any Jars of Clay fans, is readily special. It is “the first time we’ve ever put a piano ballad on a record,” vocalist Dan Haseltine once said in an interview.

Filipino fans are particularly attached to it. A couple of months ago, the video of this sad song imploring a girl not to be scared of commitment was launched, and turned out to be Philippine-made.

It stars actress Rhian Ramos, was directed by Luis Daniel Tabuena, and filmed entirely in Manila. All for free.

“It was really just such a gift. We didn’t have to spend a dime on the video; they did it all,” Haseltine said.

Now, the Christian rock band is giving back. Using that song from its latest album Inland, it is raising US$50,000 for Filipinos whose homes – and lives – have been devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on November 8.

If you go to NoiseTrade, a site for free (and legal!) music downloads, you can get “Fall Asleep” for free. And then, you will be asked to leave a tip.

All the tips that will be raised will be donated to the Philippine Red Cross, which is among the organizations on the forefront of rescue and relief operations in the Visayas.

The Grammy-winning group from Nashville was one of the first Christian bands, if not the first, to post a message for the Philippines after the onslaught of Haiyan:

Then on Thursday, November 14 – almost exactly two months since the launch of the “Fall Asleep” video – Jars of Clay started the fund-raising on NoiseTrade:

This is only the second time that the 20-year-old band initiated a fundraising for a humanitarian cause. (Local bands are raising funds too for Yolanda/Haiyan relief. See their list here.)

In 2002, after Haseltine’s visit to Africa, the band formed a non-profit called Blood: Water Mission that has since raised funds for efforts to address poverty and AIDS in the region.

In its effort to raise funds the Philippines, Jars of Clay announced: “Join us and the many others as we hope to be generous in turn with our love, prayers, and finances during this great time of need for our friends and neighbors that have been ravaged by Typhoon Haiyan.”

And sing along…

So stay up with me,

don’t fall asleep.

Because we only have this moment

once in our lives.

And next time we’ll meet

under city lights

We’re here tonight,

so let’s make it all

it was meant to be.

And, hopefully, give generously. – Rappler.com
