MANILA, Philippines – Got books to give?
In a Facebook post last July 30, community page “Aklatan sa Bawat Eskwelahan” (Library in every school) made a call out for assistance on behalf of Neldy Jolo, a Tausug, former college lecturer, and alumnus of the Mindanao State University – Sulu Laboratory High School.
Jolo taught biology and agronomy from 2003 to 2006 using the 1950s-era textbooks available to them. These materials proved insufficient for the challenges facing today’s learners.
In the words of Dr. Magdar Sarahadil, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of Mindanao State University, “If we have enough books, we also can compete with other schools outside the province and provide the students a quality education.”
Mindanao State University, established by virtue of Republic Act 1387 in September 1961, is a multi-campus institution, with 8 autonomous campuses located in Marawi City, Iligan City, Tawi-Tawi, Naawan in Misamis Oriental, Maguindanao, General Santos, Sulu, and in Buug, Zamboanga-Sibugay, as well as the Lanao National College of Arts and Trade, the Lanao Norte Agricultural College, and the Maigo School of Arts and Trade.
Mindanao State University – Sulu Laboratory High School (MSU-SLHS) alone has 600 students studying from grade 7 to grade 10, with 5 sections for each grade level.
MSU is just one of many more public elementary and secondary schools in the region that greatly need updated books.
Send your books to Mindanao!
Move.PH, Rappler’s civic engagement arm, is launching a campaign to help MSU-SLHS and other schools in Mindanao that badly need books.
We are asking for your help in collecting book donations. Rummage through your closets, attics, and your homes. Send learning and knowledge to those who have a greater need for them.
According to Jolo, MSU-SLHS badly need books that are K-12 compliant:
- Science, Grades 7 to 10
- English, Grades 7 to 10
- Filipino, Grades 7 to 10
- Mathematics, Grades 7 to 10
- Science, Grades 7 to 10
- TLE (Technology, Livelihood and Education), Grades 7 to 10
- MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health)
All other books, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, novels, and other reference materials are welcome. But please avoid donating dilapidated books.
If you would like to donate, you may drop off your books at this location:
Ahmad S. Musahari. 1081 Isabelle Residences, Ramagi Building, Singgalong Cor. Pedro Gil Street, Paco, Manila 1000
You can also send the books directly to:

- Interested donors can inform Rappler (via move.ph@rappler.com) or through Lou Gepuela (09156531748) about the donation (volume of books, pick up point, and contact person).
- Rappler will arrange the pick up with volunteer riders.
- This service is only available on weekends.
Tell us about it!
Make sure to take photos and tweet them to @MovePH or post it in our Facebook page once you’ve given the books so we can confirm and promote your effort.
Download this confirmation receipt and give it to the driver or point person so we can account for the books donated.
If you know a school in the region that also needs books or if you have any ideas on how to send books and help, you can send us the details via e-mail at move.ph@rappler.com so we can include them in our list of beneficiaries.
We will update this page as more collection points become available and more schools that need books come to light. Thank you for your generosity! – Rappler.com
