Innovation +SocialGood: #2030Now #HackSociety
Save the date! On September 24, 2016, Rappler, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will once again host the annual Social Good Summit. This year, we want you to #HackSociety!

MANILA, Philippines – With over 60 million Filipinos still not connected to the internet and many others still lacking skills needed to navigate the new economy, disruptive technologies and the digital revolution threaten to leave many of our countrymen behind.

Yet, beyond giving us shiny gadgets and gizmos that entertain and enthrall, these technologies have the power to help society solve its biggest problems.

In a world where 3D printing technology has reduced atoms and genes to software and where robots are replacing the human worker, how do we equip ordinary Filipinos with essential skills they will need to stay relevant and competitive?

How can we effectively use technological innovation to help farmers increase their harvest or market their goods? How do we use them to transform scarcity into abundance?

On September 24, 2016, we tried to answer these questions.

Rappler, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),  once again hosts the annual Social Good Summit.

What’s new? We want you to #HackSociety!

On its fifth year, the Philippines Social Good Summit will teach the innovation process through a solution-simulation forum where participants learn, connect, and act.

We introduce #HackSociety, an ideathon that harnesses the new democratic space in order to crowdsource “hacks” that aim to address these core issues:

Accountability & Governance

Education and jobs

Environment and disasters

Food, agriculture, and poverty alleviation

Peace and development

#HackSociety is an experiment where decision-makers will meet citizens, and where both will work together to solve common problems and challenges. It will connect the disruptors with those in the peripheries: teachers, farmers, and workers groups with digitally-savvy millennials and students, as well as innovators in the academe and industries.

It will help proponents enhance and shape their ideas into viable projects.

Seats for #HackSociety are limited. To participate, interested groups are required to submit ideas or “hacks” via x.rappler.com. Click here for more details on the #HackSociety mechanics.

You may also email socialgood@rappler.com using #HackSociety in the subject line.

About the Social Good Summit

The Social Good Summit is an annual global event organized around the United Nations General Assembly. It is sustained globally by +SocialGood, a community which shares world-changing ideas to spark action in our social media era. Rappler’s Maria Ressa is one of its 5 global advisors.

Rappler has been organizing the Philippine leg of this global event since 2012.

Each year, we bring together a lineup of speakers and about 1,000 people with many more online via livestream, live blog, and social media.

The discussions have normally trended #1 in the Philippines and up to #1 globally, kicking off a global dialogue picked up in different cities around the world. You can read more and watch our events in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

In 2014, the Philippine leg of the Social Good Summit was held in two locations: Manila and Tacloban City, the city that suffered the brunt of Typhoon Yolanda, the world’s strongest typhoon which killed more than 6,000 people. The event highlighted the need for a holistic approach to this enormous global threat: one that involves all sectors of society, including government, civil society, the private sector and ordinary citizens.

You can revisit the visualization of the Twitter communities that participated in SGS last 2014.

Last year’s theme “Innovation +SocialGood: #2030Now #TheLeaderIWant,” explored the disruptive power of technology and the integral role leaders play in fostering innovative ideas that could help address the complex problems of our day. It set the stage for the national conversation that led us to the most engaged elections the Philippines has witnessed so far.
