(UPDATED) Quick ways to donate

(UPDATED) MANILA, Philippines –  It’s flooding relief and donations as nearly 200,000 families across the country have been affected by heavy flooding and landslides caused by torrential rain.  

Social networking service Multiply.com now accepts donations on behalf of the Philippine Red Cross, its country manager Jack Madrid said on Twitter on August 7.  

“Philippine Red Cross needs our help in sustaining its humanitarian operations,” the site announced.

At the University of the Philippines-Diliman, the University Student Council (USC), in cooperation with the League of College Councils (LCC), launched IskoOperaton, a relief operation drive that aims to help evacuees from Bgy UP Campus. Around 300 residents from the UP community were evacuated Tuesday morning.

The IskoOperation is specifically asking for clothes, basic toiletries, medicine, underwear, diapers and sanitary napkins, insect repellant, blankets, tarpaulin, pillows, cartons, mosquito blankets, batteries, canned good, bread, instant noodles, packed snacks, sugar and water. Drop boxes are already located in most of the colleges and dormitories in the university.

According to USC vice chairperson Alex Castro, IskoOperation will be accepting donations until Thursday and repacking of goods will be on Friday, while the  distribution of goods will be held on Saturday.

Other insitutions that provide relief and assistance to flood victims have also called for donations via social media:

The Citizens’ Disaster Response Center posted on its Facebook page that it is accepting donations for families affected by the floods. Donations can be dropped at 72-A Times Street, West Triangle Homes, Quezon City. The disaster management group can be reached at telephone numbers (02) 929-9820 to 22.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced that over 160 schools are providing shelter for nearly 14,000 families affected by flooding due to incessant rain in Luzon. 

Education Secretary Armin Luistro instructed DepEd-National Capital Region (NCR) schools division superintendents to work closely with local government units and city social welfare and development offices in their respective areas.

“We need to make sure that we have enough supplies to provide for the needs of evacuees under our care. Let us work hand in hand with our city and barangay officials to ensure that urgent needs are provided, given the current situation,” Luistro said.

DepEd reported that as of 10 am, August 8, the largest number of evacuees (9,741 families) was in NCR followed by Region 3 (2,568 families) and Region 4A (2,180 families).
