Netizens report #EarthquakePH real-time

MANILA, Philippines – Earthquake and typhoon on the same day? Not the best combination. 

Netizens quickly turned to social media in the wake of the magnitude 5.4 earthquake, which shook Occidental Mindoro on Monday evening, October 19. Prayers poured on social media as keywords #earthquake and Lindol quickly trended on Twitter just a few minutes after the quake. 

According to the latest bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake happened at 9:50 pm. Its location was recorded 19 km northeast of Looc, Occidental Mindoro.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 101 kilometers.

In the event of an earthquake, Renato Solidum, director of Phivolcs, has these survival tips:

• Stay indoors if one is already in a house or a structurally-sound building.

• Duck, cover, and hold on to something sturdy.

• After the shaking stops, those indoors should evacuate to a safe open space.

Tremors were felt in several parts of Metro Manila. Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected after the quake.– Rappler.com
