3 dams in Luzon open gates to release excess water
Nona continues to bring heavy to moderate rains in Luzon on Thursday, December 17 as it weakens to a tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines – Gates of Angat and Ipo dams in Bulacan and Magat dam in Isabela were opened as Tropical Depression Nona (Melor) brought moderate to heavy rains in Luzon, Thursday morning, December 17. (READ: Nona a tropical depression, but more floods possible)

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the 3 dams are still open as of 6pm, Thursday, December 17.

  • Angat dam (3 gates opened at 1.80 meters)
  • Ipo dam (3 gates opened at 1.30 m)
  • Magat dam (1 gate opened at 1m)

The National Power Corporation already announced on Wednesday night, December 16 that opening gates in Angat dam would not cause any flooding in areas along Angat River. (READ: Angat dam to release excess water)

Meanwhile, Ambuklao and Binga dams in Benguet were also opened earlier today, but were closed around 3 pm.

Despite Nona’s downgrade to a tropical depression, PAGASA still warned of flash floods and landslides in low-lying and mountainous areas in Zambales, Aurora, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region. –Rappler.com
