The term was first introduced in the eponymous best-selling book authored by Salim Ismail, Michael S. Malone, and of course, Yuri Van Geest. Using their definition, an Exponential Organization is “one whose impact (or output) is disproportionally large – at least 10x larger – compared to its peers because of the use of new organizational techniques that leverage accelerating technologies.”
Quintessential examples of Exponential Organizations include the likes of Uber, Netflix, and Airbnb. How did these companies change the game?
Big things, small packages
For the longest time, size mattered. Business leaders functioned under the classic assumption of scarcity – that resources are limited, and that one needed to own and acquire as much as possible to stay at the top of the game. And while there was growth in this method, resources would need to be expended so that growth was painstakingly linear.
But in recent years, due to the push of new technology, that paradigm has been turned on its head. Now, the economy is shifting towards the idea of abundance. Instead of ownership, organizations may instead leverage on the new technologies available to do something new; for example, act as platforms for existing properties.
That’s how startups like Uber and Airbnb can dominate their respective industries without needing to own a single car or piece of real estate. That’s how, in a matter of a few short years, their growth has been exponential.
The emergence of these Exponential Organizations has been a disruptive force across all industries. Their rapid, accelerated growth has enabled them to go toe-to-toe with large, long-established industries, which are now forced to scramble to remain ahead.
The question organizations face is: What now? In the face of accelerated change and rapid evolution, how can your organization remain or become relevant?
