
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is offering transportation assistance, dubbed as Balik-Probinsya (back to the province), to survivors of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) who who want to return to their respective hometowns.
Around 5,572 displaced families (or 23,489 individuals) sought temporary refuge in Metro Manila after the disaster. Many of the evacuees were helped by volunteers of the Oplan Salubong operations at the Villamor Air Base.
As of January, around P7 million has been disbursed by DSWD for the transportation needs of over 1,200 families (or 6,250 individuals) since December 20, 2013.
The DSWD National Capital Region (NCR) Field Office is currently evaluating those who want to avail of the program.
More foreign donations
Even after two months since Typhoon Yolanda devastated Eastern Visayas, the international community is still sending its support to the Philippines.
Thailand recently donated US$1,642,082.04 for the survivors. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Lao PDR Resident Representative Minh Pham and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Lao PDR Country Manager Stefania Dina also donated US$200. The check donations were turned over to DSWD.
As of January, DSWD has received a total of P72,418,737.60 from local donations and US$17,672,759.55 from foreign donations. – Rappler.com
