VIDEO: Hong Kong OFWs respond to Haiyan

Through this film, we hope to remind people to never lose hope

HONG KONG – My friend Safran and I were in Hong Kong when Haiyan struck the Visayas. We wanted to fly there as soon as we heard about it, but we couldn’t. We realized, however, that we could still help through the one skill we have: filmmaking.

After all, we developed our filmmaking skills there at a film school in Cebu, Philippines.

While people need all kinds of donations, the most important thing they need is hope. Through this film we wanted to gather what the overseas Filipinos who were stuck in Hong Kong faraway from their loved ones and highlight what they were doing to help. One day, we decided to randomly talk to Filipinos on the streets of Hong Kong. One encounter led to another. Very quickly we had tons of materials to edit.

We weren’t 100% confident about being able to dig up an inspirational story. But as it turned out, the usually fragmented Filipino community here united as one. In 2013, overseas Filipinos showed their government and the world that they are one.

We hope that this film reminds people to never lose hope.
