MANILA, Philippines — The streets are no longer just a child’s playground. They have also become their training ground for battle. 

The Philippines we have now is more or less the Philippines we will bequeath to our children. With the trial over the pork barrel scam dragging its feet across our television screens, burdened by numerous distractions and delays, the Philippines appears to be a country where politicians can rob the public blind and fear none of the consequences.  

Nearly a year after the Million People March, an anti-pork scam movement was re-convened coinciding with the commemoration of Philippine Independence. Protests renew calls to jail all those involved, in the name of social justice. 

For now, June 12 – Independence Day – is another holiday that will pass. But if the independence this holiday marks means the rich and powerful are free to rule the country without the least bit of concern for the people who placed them in the seat of power, then the battle of our children, if not our children’s children, have a long, long way to go. – Rappler.com
