MANILA, Philippines—Discussions on national identity have always been contentious in the Philippines.

What makes a person “Filipino?” Should one have been born and raised in the Philippines? Does it have anything to do with the nationalities of your parents?

Does being Filipino have more to do with imbibing Philippine culture and traditions? Does it entail knowing how to speak the language? Is being Filipino a state of mind, or is it something that takes place in the heart?

On the country’s 114th Independence Day, Rappler wants to know: do you identify as Filipino? Why or why not? What makes you say #PinoyAko?
