Flowers for moms working 24/7 in disaster agency
About 70 employees from various emergency response clusters of the NDRRMC work around the clock to monitor Typhoon Dodong (Noul)

MANILA, Philippines –  Despite the storm, their day was not forgotten.

In a touching, light moment at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) operation center (OpCen), Undersecretary Alexander Pama surprised mothers in the conference room with white and red roses.

Thirty-year old Ruby Jean de los Reyes, a Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) employee, almost teared up after receiving a rose from the NDRRMC chief Sunday night, May 10.

She planned to spend Sunday, Mother’s Day, with her family. She wanted to treat her mother to lunch and celebrate her 4-year-old son’s upcoming birthday. She also thought she could spend quality time with her one-year-old daughter over the weekend.

De los Reyes had to cancel her plans on Sunday. She needed to help gather critical disaster information like prepositioned relief goods and evacuation centers in areas bracing for Typhoon Dodong (international codename Noul).

She has been reporting to the OpCen since Friday, May 8, monitoring Typhoon Dodong updates, she said.

At least 25 other working mothers in the headquarters received flowers from Pama.

Nakakatuwa, kase kahit ‘di namin kasama ang families namin, parang naging family na rin namin ang mga tao sa NDRMCC,” said DSWD employee Al Isles after receiving a rose. Isles has been working for 18 hours a day since Thursday, May 7.

(Although we are not with our families today, we feel glad because we found a family in NDRRMC.)

At 10 pm, Sunday, Pama again greeted the mothers in the headquarters in a meeting, drawing a round of applause from other employees in the OpCen.
