#PHVote: Join the call to extend voter registration

Below is the statement of the #PHVote coalition following Comelec’s decision not to extend voter registration despite the repeated suspension of voter registration operations caused by coronavirus-driven hard lockdowns since 2020. #PHVote coalition, composed of groups from various sectors, aims to promote more avenues for civic participation in the coming elections, help increase voter registration and turnout, and help fight election-related disinformation. 

Dahil sa abot-abot na lockdown, halos anim na buwan sa buong bansa, at walong buwan sa mga piling lugar, ang nawala sa itinakdang panahon para sa pagpaparehistro ng mga botante para sa eleksiyon sa 2022. 

Sa kabila nito, sinabi ng Commission on Elections (Comelec) na hindi nito pahahabain ang voter registration period. Hahabaan na lang daw ang oras bawat araw at magbubukas tuwing Sabado at holidays hanggang dumating ang deadline na Setyembre 30.

Malinaw na hindi sapat ang mga dagdag na oras na ito para bawiin ang mga buwan na nawala sa mga kalipikadong botante. Ang mga hahabol namang magpalista ay maaaring maubusan na ng slots sa appointment schedule sa kanilang lokal na Comelec.  

Dahil dito, higit sa 13 milyong Filipino ang maaaring hindi makapagparegistro, ayon sa mga mambabatas.

Kaya nananawagan kami: 

• Sa Comelec, na palawigin hanggang Enero 2022 ang voter registration period. Ito ang pinakasapat na panahon upang mabigyan ng pagkakataon ang mga Filipino na nais lumahok sa susunod na halalan. 
• Sa COVID-19 Inter-agency Task Force, na ituring na essential activity ang voter registration upang maisagawa ito sa kabila ng community quarantine. Ang pagboto ay isa sa pinakamahalagang ambag ng mamamayan sa pagpapatibay ng demokrasya. 
• Sa Department of Transportation, Department of Public Works and Highways, and mga pamahalaang lokal, na siguraduhing may sapat at maayos na pampublikong transportasyon at bukas na kalsada upang makarating at makauwi nang ligtas ang mga Filipino mula sa voter registration sites.
• Sa Comelec, na siguruhing sumunod sa #ApatDapat health protocols ang lahat ng voters’ registration sites. Kasama rito ang sapat na bentilasyon, physical distancing, laging pagsusuot ng face mask, at maikling panahon ng pananatili sa lugar at posibleng exposure sa virus.

Hindi natin ikinakaila na kailangan ng Comelec ng panahon para makapaghanda sa halalan. Ngunit hindi rin natin maitatangging nasa pambihirang kalagayan ang ating bansa at sa mga darating pang buwan. Dapat tumugon ang mga patakaran ng pamahalaan sa tawag ng panahon. 

Nakasalalay sa eleksiyon sa 2022 ang kabuhayan, kinabukasan, kalusugan, at karapatan ng mga Filipino. Higit kailanman, hindi dapat isakripisyo ang ating karapatan at tungkuling bumoto.
