Flash floods due to Typhoon Rolly sweep away several homes in Batangas

Several homes in Batangas City were swept away on Monday, November 2, by flash floods spawned by Typhoon Rolly.

The typhoon left in its wake a trail of destruction including muddy roads, fallen trees, and damaged vehicles. Among the areas severely affected in Batangas were Tierra Verde, Barangay Pallocan West, and parts of Barangay San Isidro and Libjo, according to the Batangas Public Information Office Capitol.

While several residents in Batangas had to clean up muddy homes and streets after Typhoon Rolly, others had to deal with the reality that their houses and sari-sari stores were gone, swept away by rampaging floodwaters.

Fe Ortega of Lobo, Batangas was slowly rebuilding her sari-sari store after typhoon Quinta destroyed it last week. Last night, typhoon Rolly washed away her store and her entire house.

Several residents in Barangay San Isidro, Batangas City said that water levels rose in just under 30 minutes and washed away not just homes but also cars and livestock.

Residents from Brgy. Mataas na Bayan, Sitio Ilaya, Lemery, Batangas also encountered on Monday sink holes that they estimated to be about 25 feet deep. These fissures first appeared when Taal Volcano erupted at the start of 2020. Residents, however said the crevasses seemed to have gotten bigger after Typhoon Rolly.
