Comelec misses poll automation deadline

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) failed to meet its self-imposed deadline for deciding on the poll automation system for the upcoming national and local elections in 2016. On Tuesday, July 21, Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista admitted the commission could not meet the original target of July due to a number of legal and procedural roadblocks. Bautista added it was “hard to pinpoint” a new target date, but stressed a decision needed to be made as soon as possible. The independent government agency is under increasing pressure to ensure the country will have an automated election system in place before the May 2016 elections, already less than a year away. But failed biddings and pending petitions before the Supreme Court threaten to further delay this project.
