The Philippine government will spend 25% more next year on national defense, should congress approve the proposed 2016 national budget. The Aquino administration is proposing a record P25 billion (US$552 million) for the Defense Department, or an increase of P5 billion over its present budget. The extra cash will go to purchase navy frigates and patrol aircraft in an attempt to bolster the country’s claim over disputed islands in the South China Sea. The Philippines has one of the region’s most poorly equipped military. It is currently pursuing a military modernization program worth P75 billion (US$1.6 billion). China meanwhile spends US$142.9 billion for its military alone. President Aquino will present the budget to Congress on Monday, July 27, at his final State of the Nation Address.
