The death of Andal Ampatuan Sr, former Maguindanao governor and powerful leader of the Ampatuan clan, will not end their family’s hold on local politics, according to his son Sajid Ampatuan. The clan patriarch died on July 17 in a hospital in Manila. At the time of his death, he was charged with masterminding the 2009 massacre of 58 people in Maguindanao. Tens of thousands of people from all over the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) visit the burial site to pay their respects to the former governor. The Ampatuans have ruled over Maguindanao politics for decades, allying themselves with the ruling government and keeping a tight grip on the reigns of power there.
