At past midnight on Friday, July 24, Angel Manalo, the younger brother of Iglesia ni Cristo executive minister Eduardo Manalo, spoke to reporters about corruption plaguing their church. Denying that he was challenging his brother’s leadership, he said the problem lay with the people surrounding him. Described as a charismatic minister himself, Angel said in Filipino, “The doctrine of the Iglesia ni Cristo is now damaged. In the same way that you looked up to us before, now you can see there are many anomalies. There are many acts of corruption in the Church. That’s what we want to avoid.” He also appealed to his brother not to listen to corrupt officials within the Iglesia council or Sanggunian.
