They stay in 437 cramped evacuation centers in Luzon and Visayas
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A total of 55,236 families or about 260,000 persons are staying in 437 evacuation centers in Luzon and Visayas, according to data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as of 3 p.m. Wednesday August 8.
In Metro Manila alone, there are nearly 186,111 residents in evacuation centers, DSWD added. As of 6 am Wednesday, Caloocan City has the most number of evacuees: 28,000. In Marikina, 11,024 were evacuated. (The available 3 p.m. DSWD report doesn’t provide a break down.)
Badly hit Calabarzon (Southern Tagalog) region has 65,688 residents in evacuation centers as of 6 a.m. Wednesday. Worst hit is Rizal province with 52,995 of its residents in evacuation centers.
Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman called for more volunteers on Tuesday to help in the repacking of relief goods.
Volunteers may go to the following areas:
1) DSWD-National Resource Operations Center (NROC) at NAIA Chapel Road
2) Pasay City (beside Airport Police Department and back of Transportation Office) with Tel Nos 852-8081 and 851-2681
3) The DSWD-NCR office along Legarda St. with telephone number 734-86-40
4) DSWD-Region IV-A in Alabang, Muntinlupa with telephone number 807-4144 also welcome volunteers for repacking.
The DSWD 3 pm report said there are also 52,293 affected families with 264,814 persons are outside evacuation centers. They are also provided with relief assistance.
