Online bayanihan: ‘the Filipino spirit is waterproof’

More than two weeks of rain and the torrential downpour since Monday hasn’t dampened the Filipino spirit.  In 2010, ComScore called the Philippines the social media capital of the world.  Filipinos spend the most time on social media than any other country globally, and during this time of disaster, they put that time to good use – helping organize relief and rescue operations.  Government officials and agencies engaged in the virtual world to spread information and help harness online civic efforts.  Rappler’s Maria Ressa writes about crowdsourcing and ‘the wisdom of the crowd.’  The question is can online bayanihan translate to offline action?  The answer seems to be yes.  Also on Tuesday, one social media callout triggers creativity and humor, a sign Filipinos are coming out of the storm: yes, ‘the Filipino spirit is waterproof!’
