2 Benguet miners die after being trapped in tunnel
The small scale miners were trapped for 16 hours before rescuers found their bodies

BENGUET, Philippines – Two smallscale miners were found dead on Friday, August 7, after getting trapped for more than 16 hours inside their tunnel in Antamok, Ucab, in the town of Itogon.

The miners were identified as Jonas Isang, 24, and Eddie Latigo, 50. Both miners are residends of Tram, Barangay Ucab.

Superintendent Cherry Fajardo of the Police Regional Office Cordillera said the two were trapped in the mine tunnel at around 11 pm Thursday, August 6. Rescuers were immediately sent to search for them.

At past 3 pm Friday, the bodies of Latigo and Isang were found.

Fajardo said the rescue operation was done jointly by the Itogon association of miners, Itogon Bureau of Fire Protection, Itogon Police, and town’s emergency rescue team.

Smallscale miners in Benguet were not able to go down their tunnel in the past weeks due to heavy rains that saturated the soil, causing a series of landslides.

The mining industry remains a growing source of income in the Cordillera region. However, it is known to engage in unsafe practices and risks for some 20,000 pocket miners in the province of Benguet. – Rappler.com
