
It’s the largest fine that the US Federal Trade Commission has imposed on a single company. Google agreed to pay US$22.5m after tracking people’s web-use habits even if they had not given it permission to do so. As part of the settlement, Google also admitted its mistake. It was punished for misrepresentation and not for bypassing Safari’s tracker cookie settings. Google said no “personal information” – such as names or credit card data – had been collected, and that the action had been inadvertent.
