Kidnapped Indian released in Sulu

The Abu Sayyaf group is holding 2 foreign nationals: Japanese treasure hunter Katayama Mamaito and Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The militant group Abu Sayyaf on Friday, August 10, released an Indian national who was kidnapped in June 2011.

Residents there found Viju Koolara Veetil, 36, along the streets of Patikul town, according to Sulu provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Antonio Freyra.

“He is now undergoing debriefing session,” Freyra told Rappler in a phone interview.

It is not clear if ransom was paid for Veetil’s release. Freyra refused to comment.

Earlier this year, Freyra himself told the media about reports that Veetil was killed by the bandit group.

The Abu Sayyaf group is holding two more foreign nationals, said Freyra. They are Japanese treasure hunter Katayama Mamaito (63) and Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani. – Rappler.com
