Top judge is named caretaker PM

The head of Greece’s Supreme Court and its first woman to take the post was chosen by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos to be caretaker prime minister. Vassiliki Thanou, a 65-year-old mother of 3, is tasked to organize early elections in September, the fifth in 6 years. She had previously written European Commission chairman Jean-Claude Juncker in February, saying, “The people are not responsible for the waste of public money by past governments and for mistakes in tax policy.” Outgoing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras resigned last week and called for elections on August 20 after facing a rebellion in his Syriza party that opposed Greece’s huge bailout, its third in 5 years.
