Filipina boxer gets Customs tax bill on championship belt

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) set a price for Filipina boxer Jujeath Nagaowa’s Women’s International Boxing Association junior flyweight title to retrieve her belt. The BOC billed the Baguio City-born fighter P5,819 ($124 USD) in taxes – P3,027.13 in customs duty and P2,782 in value added tax. Nagaowa shared her story with a friend, who posted on Facebook about her plight. The post went viral. On her own Facebook, Nagaowa said she was able to retrieve the belt with the help of friends. Customs Commissioner Alberto Lina said he asked NAIA district collector Edgar Macabeo to explain why the championship belt was taxed and to submit a report on the incident.
