Cecilia Lagman, mother of activists, dies

She succumbed to multiple organ failure, says Rep Lagman

MANILA, Philippines – The feisty Cecilia C. Lagman, mother of two activists as well as Albay Rep Edcel Lagman, passed away Monday morning, August 13. She was 98.

She succumbed to multiple organ failure, said Rep Lagman in a statement.

Cecilia was the mother of two staunch anti-Marcos activists: Hermon C. Lagman, a labor and human rights lawyer who disappeared on May 11, 1977 during martial law; and rebel leader Filemon C. Lagman, former head of the communist undeground’s Metro Manila-Rizal Regional Party Committee who was assassinated on Feb 6, 2001.

She was an activist herself and was often seen in protest rallies. Cecilia was the first chairperson Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND). Her daughter Nilda Lagman-Sevilla now serves as the incumbent chairperson of FIND.

Her other daughter Evita Lagman-Tresvalles is a retired pubic secondary school teacher. Cecillia had 21 great grandchildren and 16 grandchildren, including Tabaco City Mayor Krisel Lagman-Luistro.

Rep Lagman said the wake is at the Arlington Memorial Chapels at 12 G. Araneta Avenue, Quezon City. Interment will be on Saturday, 18 August 2012, at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City. – Rappler.com
